Dining area ergonomics: how to calculate space for each guest
A familiar situation: you've invited friends over for dinner and set out your favourite dishes, but the table feels cramped? Elbows bump, and getting up from the table means disturbing everyone around you. A comfortable dining room is not just beautiful furniture but also sound ergonomics. Let's work out how many centimeters each guest needs so the evening passes without awkward moments.
The gold standard of personal space
Comfort starts with maths. For a person to feel at ease, the seating width at the table should be at least 60–70 cm. If you plan to buy chairs with a wide back or soft armchairs, feel free to add another 10 cm to this figure. This is the necessary minimum that lets you use your cutlery freely without elbowing your neighbour.
Distance to walls and other furniture
It's important to consider not only what is on the table, but also what surrounds it. For a person to easily pull out a chair, sit down and stand up, there should be at least 75–80 cm of free space behind the chair. If people will walk behind the chair, it is better to allow 100–110 cm.
When planning the layout with our furniture collection, always account for these “maneuvering zones”. If the room is small, choose models that won't overload the space, or check out ready-made sets (table + chairs), where our designers have already balanced the proportions for optimal use of floor space.
How to visually lighten the dining area
If the dining area feels cramped, use these proven visual space-expanding techniques:
- Leave some space: if possible, don't place the table right against the wall.
- Choose tables with a single central pedestal — it gives your legs more freedom.
- Mind the height: chairs should slide freely under the tabletop. This saves precious centimetres when the area is not in use.

Visual check before buying
Before settling on a specific table, take painter's tape and outline the future purchase right on the floor of your dining room. Arrange the chairs and try “having dinner.” If the space feels cramped, consider a more compact model or a different tabletop shape. Remember: furniture from ROOMS Mebel should serve your comfort, not create obstacles in everyday life. Create your interior with care, and every dinner becomes a small celebration.
