How to keep velvet chairs soft: a care guide
Velvet in interiors always means coziness, tactility and a light touch of chic. Our customers often choose it for its incredible softness, yet many are held back by one fear: “But what about care?” At ROOMS Mebel we are convinced that quality velvet is far more practical than people think. If you are already considering our chairs, know that with proper care they will keep their impeccable look for a very long time.
Consistency is your main ally
Velvet has a pile structure that attracts dust like a magnet. This is not a problem if you make light cleaning once a week a habit. Dust is the main enemy of the fabric: it settles at the base of the pile and makes it look dull.
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft upholstery attachment. Move strictly in the direction of the pile so you don't ruffle the surface.
- Once a month, wipe the surface with a slightly damp microfibre cloth. It collects small particles that the vacuum cleaner has missed.
- If you bought a ready-made set with velvet chairs, pay attention to the legs too. Wipe them with a dry cloth so dust does not settle on them and transfer to the upholstery.
What to do if a stain appears?
The main rule: panic is your enemy. Velvet does not like aggressive rubbing. If you have spilled coffee or dropped a bit of food on a chair, follow this procedure:
- Blot, don't rub. Take a paper towel or a clean white cloth and gently press it onto the stain. The liquid should soak into the paper.
- Use a soapy solution. Dilute a little neutral shampoo or soap in cool water. Whip up the foam, since it works best.
- Apply foam. Using a soft sponge, apply foam to the stain, leave it for a couple of minutes, then carefully wipe it off with a damp cloth.
- Drying. Let the furniture air-dry naturally. No hair dryers, irons or heaters — high temperatures are harmful to the pile.
How to care for velvet?
Sometimes after sitting on velvet for a long time, traces of “flattening” can remain. This is a natural feature of the fabric, not a defect. An ordinary garment steamer will help restore the furniture's original look. Hold it 10–15 cm away and guide the steam over the pile with light movements. Under the warm steam the fibers straighten out, and the upholstery looks like one of the season's new arrivals in our catalog again.
What you must never do
To avoid damaging your favourite piece of furniture, forget about these methods:
- No bleach or chlorine-based products. They will instantly fade the dye in the fabric.
- Avoid stiff brushes. You can simply “comb out” part of the pile, and a “bald patch” will form on the chair.
- Do not use alcohol-based solutions — they dry out the velvet fibres and make them brittle.
